Hi guys! When I posted a few weeks ago about chia seeds, I promised to make other posts about all my favorite superfoods. So let’s talk about one of my other top choices- flax seeds. Flax has a plethora of omega-3’s (the good fats), along with lignans (which have antioxidant qualities), and fiber (helps to keep you regular). Research has shown that due to these components, flax seeds to help combat high cholesterol and inflammation, and may even have protective effect against breast, colon, and prostate cancer. That alone is enough for me to consume these bad boys everyday! They are also great for your digestive health; they can help improve intestinal absorption of nutrients, and help food pass through our intestines at a steady rate. If you are feeling constipated, you can add some to your diet to help move things along.
An important thing to note: unlike chia seeds, flax seeds need to be ground for your body to digest them. So when purchasing them, it’s easiest to buy them already grounded so you don’t have to go to the trouble of grinding them down yourself. When eaten whole, they will just pass right through your body, and you obviously don’t want that to happen; you must absorb them to get their nutrients. As with chia seeds, start with a teaspoon a day and increase your amount from there! I also add these to my daughter’s oatmeal and smoothies. For a toddler or child who has never eaten them, you can start with a ¼ of a teaspoon and increase from there. Happy flaxing :)
