IBS, or Irritable Bowl Syndrome, is usually characterized by bouts of diarrhea, constipation, or both, People can feel bloated, gassy, and experience cramping and abdominal pain. Whether you have been told you have IBS, or suspect that you might, there is a diet that might really help alleviate your symptoms. This is actually the diet that I follow, and it gave me my life back! It’s called the FODMAP diet, and it stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. These short-chain carbohydrates are not absorbed well in the gastrointestinal tract and can be easily fermented by gut bacteria, which in turn produces carbon dioxide in the intestines. All of these nutrients are different carbohydrates; some of them are sugars and sugar alcohols, and others are non-digestible fibers. They all occur in whole foods like dairy, fruit, vegetables, grains and beans. So while you might even eat a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, some of these fruits and vegetables may actually be causing you quite a bit of discomfort.
We will meet to review your symptoms and devise a plan. You will then eliminate all the High FODMAP foods. Throughout this time, you will have unlimited email support from me. We will then systematically introduce different foods, in different amounts, from each category (F-O-D-M-A-P). Throughout this time, you will email me every day with what you are trying and your symptoms. We will meet again and I will then provide you with recommendations on how to eat moving forward. Many people (including myself!) feel tremendous relief from this diet. It’s certainly a big adjustment, so I am here to support you, hold you accountable, and provide you with step by step instructions on how to follow this diet. Please know that this diet is not permanent, the purpose is to help you feel better so your gut can heal, and eventually figure out exactly which foods cause you trouble. You will likely be able to eat different foods from all the categories, as every person is completely different, and there really is no one diet for everyone. We will continue to have follow up sessions to consistently reevaluate how you feel, and test out more foods. As your gut heals, your body should be able to tolerate more and more.

Upon adding these foods back in, it will be obvious if any are contributing to your discomfort. We will meet twice a month for 6 month, where I will provide written recommendations, handouts, recipes, cooking instructions, and be there to hold you accountable, guide and support you to feeling your absolute best and most alive self.
